The Hobby of Trains and Their Endless Enjoyment
There are endless reasons to love trains as a hobby. How do you determine what you want scale wise (N, HO, Hon3, S, Sn3, O, On3 or bigger or smaller) and what kind of space do you have to build a train layout. Perhaps you would like to just collect trains and place them on a shelf or in glass cases for viewing.
Maybe it isn’t the train or train engine you want but rather some aspect of the train scene that fascinates you.
There are several aspects of modeling train layouts for example that may peak your interests. Mine is scenery and the bridges and docks that go with that scenery. You might like the wiring and DCC controls that operate the electrical and programming of the engines.
There is the maintainability of the engines and adding DCC decoders to the engines. This includes lights and Mars lights plus sound. You may enjoy the laying of track and turnouts (switches) on various types of media available for the model railroader. Developing the scale for the track height over distance.
Building a roundhouse and turntable to meet the needs of the layout. Building various structures such as water towers, stations, oil pump stations, grain elevators, etc.
Researching specifics about a specific railroad that you want to model after. You may belong to a railroad club or several of you are building a layout and each has a specific task or tasks to perform. The idea is to find you niche and what you enjoy.
This is usually not a one man hobby but it can be. It is your choice where you want to be. There are endless things to do that will interest you. Remember you are being educated as you go along with this hobby process. It will teach you many things you do not know and will make you a better and more informed modeler. As you go along you learn a great deal about the real world of trains and how they operate. You may have operating sessions on the layout you are working on and see how the big boys operate real trains.
It is a very satisfying hobby and certainly peaks my interest as it does many hundreds of thousands more. Perhaps many more than that. Be happy and buy a train.
