Know These Important Things Before You Learn How To Knit

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Did you ever enjoy texture of yarns in your hand or wondering how that interesting color pattern was created in your favorite sweater? Then you will surely have fun learning the art of knitting. Knitting is one of several ways to turn thread or yarn into cloth-weaving and crochet. It’s all about creativity.

The Introductory Steps of Knitting

Unlike woven fabric, knitted fabric consists entirely of horizontal parallel courses of yarn. The courses are joined to each other by interlocking loops in which a short loop of one course of yarn is wrapped over the bight of another course. Knitting can be done either by hand, described below, or by machine. What makes knitting even more exciting is the fact that this art can be easily learned.

In practice, hand knitting is usually begun by forming a base series of twisted loops of yarn on a needle. This is called Cast On. A second knitting needle is then used to reach through each loop in succession in order to snag a bight of yarn and pull a length back through the loop. This forms a new stitch. Work can proceed in the round (circular knitting) or by going back and forth in rows. Knitting can also be done by machines, which use a different mechanical system to produce nearly identical results.

Knitting Styles: There are two basic styles of knitting; English and Continental. The difference between the two is in how you hold the yarn. In the English method the yarn is held in the right hand. In continental knitting, the yarn is held in the left hand. Whatever your natural hand-preference, you should be able to master either method because the nature of knitting is basically ambidextrous.

The two basic stitches are knit or plain and purl or wrong. These two nominal stitches are actually identical, however, being the obverse and reverse of the same stitch. It is the variations and combinations of these two stitches that create all the different stitch patterns which are possible in knitting. Typically, a knit stitch is formed by inserting the needle in the front of the loop from a left-to-right perspective and pulling a loop of yarn through to form a new loop, while a purl stitch is formed by inserting the needle in the front of the loop from a right-to-left perspective.

A piece of knitting begins with the process of casting on, which involves the initial creation of the stitches on the needle. Casting on is the first step in knitting These stitches become the first row of stitches and one selvage of your work, usually the bottom or hem.

Different methods of cast on are used for different effects; one may be stretchy enough for lace, while another provides a decorative edging. Provisional cast on is used when the knitting will continue in both directions from the cast on.

The body of a knitted piece may include plain stitches or a number of colors and textured patterns. The number of active stitches remains the same as when cast on unless stitches are added -an increase or removed- a decrease to shape the item.

Patterns to Knit (Way to Online Income): There are lots of people who sit at home and publish great knitting patters from home. Since over the years they have collected and modified many knitting patterns. They make a great income by selling/publishing the patterns on the net. Once you have enough practice, even you could make some online income.

Many patterns can be made by using knit and purl stitches in various combinations. If only knits or only purls are used when working back and forth in rows, the result is called garter stitch.

Alternating rows of knits and purls result in stockinette stitch, also known as stocking or jersey stitch, the stitch most often used in commercial garments such as T-shirts. Different combinations of stitches can be used to form ribbing, cables, or other textures.

Once the knitted piece is finished, the remaining live stitches are cast off. Casting or binding off loops the stitches across each other so they can be removed from the needle without unraveling the item. Although the mechanics are different from casting on, there are a similar variety of methods and choices to be made. Of the various methods the most versatile are the Plain Bind-off and the Suspended Bind-off.

Knitted garments are most commonly made in pieces, where individual sections of the garment are knit separately and then sewn together once all the pieces have been completed. Seamless knitting, where a whole garment is knit as a single piece is also possible. Smaller items, such as socks and hats are usually knit in one piece on double pointed needles.

Knitting can be easily learned these days as there are many websites on knitting and also various books for beginners available on the market, where you can find step by step instructions. These instructions are so easy to follow that even kids would not find them difficult at all. Show your creativity, grab your knitting tools and learn to knit today!

How To Make A Wrapped Wire Loop

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

For many of your bead patterns, you will need to know how to make a wrapped wire loop.

A wrapped wire loop is medium thick wire wrapped to form an enclosed loop that you use to string beads and dangles.

To create a wrapped loop you should use 20 guage wire or a head pin. You would use a head pin if you only need one side of your bead(s) to have a loop. You would use the wire if you need to create loops on both ends of the bead. As you can see, a head pin is perfect for creating dangles for earrings and for dangles to hang off your necklace. A loop on each end of a bead allows that bead to be hooked on both ends for creative design purposes.

The instructions here for a wrapped loop will show a 2″ head pin… but you can use this method on your wire of choice.

Step 1. With your flat-nose pliers, grasp the wire at least 1″ from the end.

Step 2. Using your finger, press the wire over the pliers creating a 90 degree angle

Step 3. With your round-nose pliers, grasp the wire close to the bend, with the wire close to tips of the pliers. (Where the wire is located on the round-nose pliers will determine the diameter of the loop. You should have the wire where the arrow is pointing in the photo.)
Step 4. Roll the pliers toward the bend… use your finger to press the wire around the pliers to form a loop… with the tail of the wire laying at a 90 degree angle across the bend.

Step 5. Grasp the loop with your flat-nose pliers, so that the intersection of the wire on the bend is inside the pliers… and the nose of the pliers is pointing in the same direction as the tail.

Step 6. Using your finger, bend the tail tightly around the wire.

Building A Moulding Bench For The Hobby Foundry

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

If you’re going to spend a good part of your spare time working in your hobby foundry, then you’ll need to have the best possible equipment & gear that you can afford. And there is no need to go out and spend a small fortune, if you are resourceful you can do a lot your self.

If you have the ability to fabricate & weld steel, then the best way is to
self-build, you can custom design & build a moulding bench exactly the
way you want it.

And if you don’t know how to fabricate and weld then building a moulding
bench will provide a learning experience in basic fabrication and arc
welding skills. It’s not hard; and it’s a lot of fun, & quite rewarding when you can complete worthwhile projects your self.

In the 3-Vol-foundry ebook, we illustrate a moulding bench constructed from second-hand steel tube, 3/4″ thick MDF board for bench top, it is mounted on casters for mobility around the shed. When not being used for making moulds it can be used for other purposes in the workshop.
To protect the bench top, it is wise to clad the MDF with 16g sheet metal, preferably with a zinc or galvanised coating to prevent rust occurring, which will happen if you use green sand for moulding, because it holds quite a bit moisture, and will corrode plain sheet metal.

Moulding Bench Dimensions - What is the right size for you?

Most tables & benches are made to standard heights, these heights
are determined from the average human being size… but what if you’re
not AVERAGE, you might be quite tall or very short, nothing is more
uncomfortable than working at a bench that’s not tuned to your height.

So think carefully when you construct your own moulding bench. You don’t want to have to bend over the bench too far as this will give a back ache, make it too high, and you wont be able to carry out your moulding work properly. Measure the heights of various tables and benches
around your house which are generally made to recommended table or bench heights, try these out in an imaginary way, and then adjust slightly up or down to suit your height and no one else, simply because you will be the one working on the bench.

A good way to see what bench height is best for you is to place your
mould boxes on a normal table; imagine you are about to start work
in your foundry. Make an assessment to see if the table is to high, or to low, or perhaps it’s just right, make an informed decision and then build your new moulding bench to suit you.

You will be spending a lot of time ramming and making sand moulds, so
make sure the bench height is the most comfortable possible. You should also think about storage areas underneath your moulding bench, design your bench to store your sand bins, moulding boxes, bottom boards, tins of parting powder, and other hand tools used in your hobby foundry.

How to Find Your Way at eBay?

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Despite its colossal size, navigating through eBay pages is not a problem at all. Here is a quick summary of how to find your way at eBay.

If you want to sign up at eBay (that’s the first thing you will have to do, if you want to take active part on eBay), look for ‘Register’. If you have already registered yourself with eBay, click on ‘Sign in’ to enter into the most exciting market place in the world for participation.

If you want to buy something on eBay, look for ‘Buy’ on the main page. Once you have selected an item for purchase, and you happen to be the highest bidder after the expiry (delisting of item), you have to click ‘Pay’ to facilitate the payment for the item won by you. Similarly if you want to sell something, simply clicking ‘Sell’ on the page will redirect you to desired place.

After having registered at eBay, your account is opened at the market place. This can be accessed by clicking ‘My eBay’. EBay’s efforts on making the website user friendly are laudable. You can have help two ways - through ‘Help’ or having a live help (through chat).

EBay also offers host of other services for the buyers and sellers. Click on ‘Services’ to have a look at the services offered by eBay to its members.

Find Wholesale Suppliers And Dropshippers - Working Smarter Not Harder

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

If your reading this you’ve probably already invested hours, weeks or even months of your time searching for products to sell on Ebay or your website. I’ve read that the majority of Ebay Powersellers make little profit.

This presents a dilemma, if the so-called experts aren’t making a decent living how can you expect to?

The 2 factors crucial to your online reselling success are:
1. Finding quality products that will sell.
2. Finding these products at a cost that allows you to sell at a competitive margin.

Most people will use Google or other search engines to find these products. This method has a few flaws. Firstly it is extremely time consuming. But more to the point, the wholesaler’s that will rank in Google will have search engine optimised their pages, ensuring your results are biased to the worst type of life form - the middleman.

Another popular method of searching involves contacting manufacturers directly and asking them to supply a list of wholesaler’s in your area. This can be time consuming and difficult, but in the end can pay off.

A final and little discussed approach is to buy a wholesale directory. This technique is often written off, as these directories are typically out of date. However, nowadays some directories employ full time staff to research and present current and quality wholesale suppliers.

You might think, “Why pay for something I can get for free?” This is probably true but it depends on how much you value your time.

As always you get what you pay for. Don’t expect to get information allowing you to triumph over your competitors for $20.

A great evaluation tool is http://www.ripoffreport.com/. You can see what (if any) complaints have been made against the company and assess the quality of the information.

In summery, work smarter, not harder: Assess the value of your time vs. the value of information and your computer-induced migraine might even disappear.

Top 10 Reasons Why eBay Auctions Fail

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Are you finding that auction after auction fails to attract any bidders or buyers? It happens to the best of us sometimes. Take a good look at these top ten reasons to see if any of them could be making your bidders avoid you.

1. The starting price was too high.

People don’t want to bid high before anyone else has. Always start your auctions low and let the bidders bid them up.

2. The fixed price is too high.

If you’re just selling with Buy it Now, then of course your items won’t sell if they’re too expensive. Try reducing the price a little each time the item fails to sell.

3. No picture.

Most buyers are reluctant to bid on something without a picture and that goes even more for high-value items. Think of it from the buyer’s point-of-view… Would you want to bid on an item when you’ve no idea what it even looks like?

4. You had a reserve.

Reserve prices just aren’t good for business. It scares away buyers like you wouldn’t believe, and it costs you a percentage of your final sale price. Avoid them like the plague.

5. Bad spelling and grammar.

If your titles are spelled incorrectly, then no one can actually find your auctions. If your descriptions are incoherent, no one will know what you’re talking about. Always run your text through a spelling and grammar checker before you put it up on eBay.

6. Too much for shipping.

You might be expecting people to pay more for shipping than they’re willing to. Give them a few cheaper options that will take longer or use cheaper materials.

7. Negative feedback.

If you got negative feedback on your last transaction, expect things to be slow for a while. Try selling cheap things for a while to get your account back in good standing.

8. Nasty terms.

Don’t write things all over your auction like “I will only accept returns in PERFECT condition” or “Serious bidders only, no timewasters!!” This is entirely unnecessary and just makes you look difficult to deal with.

9. No PayPal

Many buyers simply avoid any seller who doesn’t accept PayPal as a payment method. They can’t be bothered with the hassle of anything else. Even if you don’t like PayPal, you should accept it if you want to do business on eBay.

10. The items were bad.

You will have to accept that there are some items that nobody wants. Perhaps they were once popular but then people had found out that they’re useless and stopped buying them. Before you come to this conclusion, though, check everything else you can including if anyone else is managing to sell it. If you’re sure it’s something people don’t want anymore, try to return the items and buy some new stock.

A Layton Utah lawfirm lost from a lawyer in Miramar Florida

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. Thirty of the 69 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 25 years old. Twenty-eight of those 47 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service. A lawyer from Meppel won from a lawfirm in Downers Grove Illinois

10 Things You Never Thought To Buy On Ebay

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I have to admit, sometimes I get teased by friends or family for what I buy on eBay. There is very little I purchase that I don’t at least attempt to buy on eBay first. Why not? There are thousands (if not millions) of eBay listings at any given time — that’s a pretty amazing resource for everything under the sun. For everything you buy on eBay, there’s probably at least one other thing you haven’t thought of. To start you off, here’s a list of ten things you (probably) never thought to buy on eBay:

1. Postage Stamps: Yes, it is possible to get a discount on postage stamps! A lot of times companies or individuals will purchase a mass quantity of stamps for a mailing and end up not using them all. The USPS doesn’t buy back stamps, so a good alternative is to sell on eBay. Expect to pay between 80% and 90% of face value, with the bigger discount coming from a larger purchase quantity.

2. Timeshares: Real estate is big on eBay, especially timeshares! As long as you are careful in reading all of the fine print and purchasing from a reputable seller, you can come away with a great vacation at a fantastic value. You can easily pick and choose from a wide variety of locations, amenities, and prices.

3. Over-the-counter medication: Need to replenish your supply of Advil, Visine, Airborne, or Mylanta? I buy nearly all of my over-the-counter medication on eBay. It’s almost always drastically cheaper, and you can also search for generic or store brands. I save hundreds of dollars a year doing this.

4. Makeup: There are certain shades and certain brands of makeup I know I will always use. It’s easy to search for these on eBay and buy them in bulk or at a discount. It’s also a great way to find discontinued colors that you love and can’t live without! I set up a search for my favorite discontinued items and save it so I am emailed whenever an auction matching my criteria comes up. I’ve been able to keep using a certain shade of lipstick despite the fact that it was discontinued years ago.

5. eBay Business Supplies: I see so many people who sell on eBay using padded envelopes or other supplies from the USPS — not the free Priority or Express mail supplies, but the expensive supplies sold in post offices. If you know you’re going to sell more than just a few items, buy your supplies on eBay! Great discounts are to be had on bubble mailers, bubble sheets, labels, and more.

6. Spices: Yes, kitchen spices! I eat oatmeal nearly every morning and use a generous amount of pumpkin pie spice for flavor. I was spending at least $3 every time I purchased a tiny container of it at the store. I found a supplier on eBay and was able to get over ten times the amount for only twice the price!

7. Gift Cards: If you frequently shop at a certain store, it pays (literally) to check out the gift certificates category on eBay. People resell gift cards they aren’t interested in using, and you can often get a good discount. Some of the more popular stores sell for nearly 100% of face value, but others sell for 70% to 90% of face value. If you’re going to spend the money at the store anyway, why not buy a gift card and save a few bucks? I like to look at it as free money!

8. Food: The food category on eBay is huge. You can buy your favorite overseas candy, soda flavors you can’t find locally, fresh baked cookies just like mom made them, protein bars, elegant desserts, and much more. A word of warning though… looking for food on eBay can make you hungry!

9. Massage Appointments: These can usually be found in the gift certificates category. A lot of spas and massage therapy locations will sell gift certificates for massages at discounted rates to gain new customers. As long as you are careful to check that the location is legit, you can find a great deal. I was able to purchase a fantastic one-hour massage for only $35.

10. Magazine Subscriptions: Magazines make money selling ads, and they can charge more for their ads if they have more subscribers. Because of that, they will let go of a lot of subscriptions to brokers for very low prices. A lot of these brokers sell on eBay. Imagine buying a year’s subscription to your favorite magazine for only $3! They usually take four to eight weeks to kick in, but it’s well worth the wait.

Hopefully these ideas have given you a starting point for the wide variety of ways you can save money on a daily basis by purchasing through eBay. Happy bidding!
